Morning Curls
My nan's method, finally made properly
It is 6:20 in the morning. I am at the mirror with a curling wand, because at nine I have the biggest interview I have had in years. The whole apartment smells of burnt hair. When I put the wand down, a piece of my hair stays on it. The whole strand.
That evening I am at my nan's kitchen table. She listens, then goes to her bedroom and comes back with an old tea tin. Inside are rolled strips of cotton. "We made our curls in our sleep, love, not on the way out the door. You wrapped it at night and you woke up done."
I tried it that same night. The curls came out. She was right about the principle and wrong about the execution. For six months I tested everything: rags, socks, a dressing gown tie, every ready-made roller I could find online. Some roughed up my hair, some left it full of static, some fell apart after a week. Until there was a ribbon smooth enough that hair does not catch on it, and soft enough to actually sleep on all night.
Looking good shouldn't cost you your sleep or your hair.
